After months of saving up, cutting costs and working around the clock you finally have enough money in the bank (literally) to get to that very special moment - to go out there and purchase your first car. The feeling is almost akin to a baby’s first steps in this world, can be likened to the happiness you get from your first big success, and delights you as much as your first pay check. Your heart flutters as you look at the variety of choices in front of you – shiny metal pieces in different shapes, sizes and colors (especially color), all tempting you to come and take a look. You take to the words of the eager salesman like a fish to water – his job is to sell the car and you become a soft target for the shrewd vendor. You are more than willing to buy and he’s looking to make a fast buck. But that doesn’t mean that he can sell you a dummy. You need to be mentally prepared for what are termed as ‘trade secrets’. Any prospective buyer should be initiated in a few little trade secrets of his own. So, where do we begin? The process of buying a car starts much before the buying itself. The entire phase when you go around figuring out which car to buy, is an exercise in itself. An ideal situation would see you conducting an in-depth research into what will suit your needs and still be easy on the pocket. Friends can help you out in this by letting you in on their opinions, and you will get all the information you need if you surf the internet. As soon as you have sifted through all of this information and decided on the car of your dreams (or the car your wallet lets you think is of your dreams) – you’re ready to enter the showroom. The dealer always does his homework; and once you have read this article, you should have done your homework too. The first thing you need to know is that the salesman is never your friend. He has a huge pile of ulterior motives urging him on to fleece you. Don’t let his rehearsed clichéd pitch deceive you. The best time of the month to buy a car is towards the end of the month, for the salesmen are under duress to stack up their sales in order to get a bonus. Also, going late on a Sunday can be of help as there’s usually a weekend bonus in place. The next part would involve the salesman describing the car to you and he’s bound to make his speech as flowery and flattering as possible. If you have done your homework right, you should have no problems seeing through his bouts of exaggeration and undeserving adulation. After this is out of the way, you have to negotiate on the price. If you’re not a born haggler, take along a friend who is quite good at negotiating the price. Finally, once you’ve sealed the deal (without letting the salesman have a laugh at your expense), he’s bound to try and cash in on the bonus by offering to sell you unnecessary things such as an extended warranty, seat covers it all. Show him you’re a pro and don’t be taken in. You should now be ready to buy your first car. Happy driving!
